Our first H&SA General Program meeting will be on October 13, at 7:30 p.m. at MLHS. At the meeting, we will learn about the Long Range Education Plan which has been under development for the past year. This fall we will be bringing back two of our favorite fundraisers. The Annual H&SA Bake Sale will begin with pre-orders taken in September and cooking and delivery in October. There are many opportunities to participate in this event (which is my personal favorite!), most of which will just take a few hours of your time. Our second fall fundraiser is Portraits by the Lake. Sitting appointments are limited, and are on a first come first serve basis, so reserve soon. More information on both of these events can be found in this issue of The Bulletin. I’m looking forward to a very productive year. The 2009-10 H&SA board is a great combination of old and new faces. I know we will come up with fun new ideas for programs, fundraisers and events that will benefit both the schools and the community. Join the Fun and Support the Schools ☺ It’s time to start thinking about our Bake Sale! Each year, by your generosity and support, the Home & School Association is able to do great things for our schools. All the money that is raised is given back to the schools to fund worthy projects like the purchase of SmartBoards. While you support this great cause, you will socialize with new and old friends, enjoy a beautiful fall day while making deliveries and best of all, share an easy homemade meal with your family. How You Can Help: Workshop Coordinator – The Workshop Coordinators are responsible for overseeing 3 workshops. This includes following up with the hostess to make sure everything needed for a successful workshop is in place and making reminder calls to the volunteers signed up to cook. Workshop Volunteer – Join a team of Lakers to make a dish. Workshops normally start at 9 a.m. and require 3-4 hours of time. Don’t worry if you can’t cook! You’ll be given a job that you can do and have a great time in the process! Delivery Volunteers – Volunteers will be given a set amount of food to deliver in the afternoon, around 1-3 p.m. Order Food – Choose several items for dinner that night or for the freezer. We’ve got homemade soups, entrees, sauces and desserts. Entrees are meant to feed approximately 4, and desserts feed 6. We’ve got more variety than ever before so there’s truly something for everyone! I hope that each of you and your families has found it enjoyable and restful. Construction crews have been working throughout the summer on roofing projects at the High School and Wildwood. This completed work has readied those two buildings for the solar panels that we expect will be installed sometime this fall. At Wildwood School, we have also prepared for our first year opening with a camera security access on our front doors. While I realize that this will represent a cultural change at our elementary school, we believe that this safety step far outweighs any inconvenience that we may initially experience. This summer there has also been a great deal of preparation, both on the State and National level, to prepare for the H1N1 virus. I have attended and participated in several conferences with other county superintendents and health officials to discuss how we will plan our response to an upcoming vaccination program and the advent of cases of H1N1 in our schools. Currently, the CDC is recommending vaccination of all school age children in a voluntary program. A two-shot series, separated by a 28-day period, will begin sometime in late October or early November. Our public school buildings will be used as a distribution point for these vaccination clinics and there is currently discussion of the best times for such shots to be given. On a very positive note, the CDC anticipates sufficient vaccine availability to inoculate all at risk populations. Furthermore, the experience of H1N1, over the past few months in southern hemisphere countries, has not demonstrated any unusual mutations of the virus. Again, this year we will be using both our website and our Parentlink Communication system for updating our community and explaining our plans to limit the spread of this virus. On a programmatic note, we have done the final edits of our 2009-2014 Long Range Education Plan. We will hold a final, public meeting in September and hope to have the Board of Education adopt the plan in October, consistent with our original timeline. With a $10 donation, your child will select a new book to be placed in the library with a bookplate in their honor. SUMMER READING LOGS DUE IN LIBRARY Wildwood students in 1st through 5th grade are reminded to turn in their summer reading logs to the library by Friday, September 11. Please be sure to include your name, grade, homeroom and parent’s signature. We will be recognizing all participating students during our Summer Reading Assembly later this month. P.E.A.K. News - Gifted and Talented/Enrichment The Wildwood Mentorship Program: Welcome back! Once again this year, we will be conducting fall mentorships for our Wildwood students in grades 2-4. We will be recruiting students from M.L.H.S. as well as adult community members who are willing to share their professions, expertise, experiences, talents and hobbies with our students. This sharing may involve conducting a workshop, making a classroom presentation, acting as a mentor for an individual or a small group of students in math, language arts, science, etc. We will provide materials and training! If you are interested, please call Lindsay Kielley at (973) 334-3609. The ARC Program at Wildwood will begin the week of September 14. This program enables students who have demonstrated high academic readiness to come out of their regular classrooms and explore advanced concepts in reading and/or mathematics. Because students will miss academic instruction in their regular classes, they must be able to function independently at a very high level in order to be successful. Fifth Grade Enrichment Clusters will begin in mid-October, and they will run throughout the year. These clusters will meet during reinforcement period and are open to all students. Students will be able to select a cluster based on their interests during a homeroom period in mid-September. Some examples include the following: Stock Market Game, Knowledge Masters, and Shake it up with Shakespeare. The girls lacrosse program will participate in the NJAC and in the Northern New Jersey Girls Lacrosse League. . In the last year of the Colonial Hills Conference, I am proud to announce that Mountain Lakes H.S. was selected to receive the “Sportsmanship Banner” for the Colonial Division. I hope everyone had a great summer and enjoyed all that the community has to offer. I especially want to thank the Recreation Commission, Police Department, Mountain Lakes Fire Department, Boonton Township Fire Department, Boonton Kiwanis Ambulance Squad and Department of Public Works for a wonderful July 4th celebration. The fireworks over Mountain Lakes are a tradition that generations of Lakers have enjoyed and make for many fond childhood memories. Shortly after our July 4th celebration, Borough Manager Joe Tempesta left Mountain Lakes for an opportunity as the Borough Administrator in East Hanover. During Joe’s brief tenure with Mountain Lakes, he proved to be a very capable Manager and realized permanent savings in the administration of our Borough. We wish Joe and his family all the best of luck. As soon as Joe informed the Council of his decision to leave, the Council appointed a Search Committee to begin the process of looking for our next Borough Manager. There are a total of seven members on the Search Committee chaired by Councilman George Jackson. The members of the committee are Deputy Mayor Charles Gormally, Councilwoman Blair Schleicher-Bravo, Rainer Mimberg, Bud Luzzi, John Pendleton and Art Muti. The committee posted the position on Borough and League websites and in a municipal trade publication. They received and reviewed over 75 applications, conducted eight interviews and continue to narrow the field of candidates through interviews and reference checks. Based on the status to date, we should have a new manager in place by early fall. In addition to appointing a Search Committee, the Council named Police Chief Bob Tovo the Interim Borough Manager. Chief Tovo has been performing the duties of both the Police Chief and Borough Manager since July 9. Chief Tovo’s knowledge and understanding of our community coupled with his dedication and hard work has made this time of transition much easier to manage. On behalf of the entire Council and the residents of the Borough, I want to thank Chief Tovo for his continued service to our community. I hope this update has been helpful. I HAVE SEEN MOUNDS OF MULCH AROUND TREES THROUGHOUT TOWN. HOW DEEP SHOULD THE MULCH BE AROUND MY TREES AND WHAT KIND OF MULCH IS BEST? Mulch is useful for controlling weeds, retaining soil, protecting the roots and generally increasing the health of the tree. It is best to mulch with wood chips or other coarse organic material. Mulch should never touch the tree’s bark and never be piled higher than 3 to 4 inches deep. Mulch that is too deep or directly touching the trunk of the tree decreases the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide which can lead to fungal and bacterial diseases. Mulch should not be allowed to become compacted, and before any new is applied, should be loosened and aerated. A properly mulched tree is surrounded by a “donut”, not a “volcano”. 14. WHAT IS A BERM AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT THE HEALTH OF TREES? A berm is a deep mound of earth used by landscapers to serve a specific purpose such as privacy from a busy road. Berms can be detrimental to the health of an existing tree if the tree’s roots are covered by a new berm. The root system may be deprived of oxygen and proper water drainage. If a tree is planted in a berm, the roots will likely grow too shallow and put the tree at a greater risk of blowing over. 20. MY HEMLOCK TREE APPEARS TO BE FAILING. WHAT CAN I DO? The most common problem plaguing Hemlocks in our area is Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. This piercing-sucking insect is tiny, dark brown and aphid like. It feeds on the plant causing it loss of vitality and in time, death. The insect is identified by a white, cottony, sticky substance it produces to protect itself and its eggs. This “woolly” substance covers the underside of the tree’s outermost branch tips. This infestation is controllable through horticultural oil spray or systemic treatments that can be administered by local tree services. Contact an arborist in our area to evaluate your tree. Those desiring a flu shot should come to the Borough Hall to pre-register and pre-pay by Friday, September 25, 2009 to reserve a shot. Shots are available to any adult Borough resident, but are particularly important for senior citizens and those with heart or lung disease. Children between the ages of nine and 17 who have a medical reason to take the flu shot or whose doctor desires them to have one may sign up for the clinic; however parents must bring a written prescription from the doctor requesting that the shot be given with them to the clinic. Shots will not be given to children without the physician’s note. No shots will be given to children under the age of 9. Contact your physician to obtain flu shots for children under the age of nine. Helping Hands Program Reach Out and Help a Child…All it Takes is a Helping Hand The Helping Hands program is a child safety initiative sponsored by the Home and School Association with the cooperation and support of the Mountain Lakes Police Department. Last year, the town had more than 80 Helping Hands signs scattered in various neighborhoods. Children were instructed by parents and teachers to identify the sign of a white hand against a blue background. This sign means that a child has a place to go to seek protection and aid if they are in what they perceive to be a dangerous or uncomfortable situation (getting lost; being hurt, bullied or otherwise frightened; getting caught in a thunderstorm).
